A webmaster is  also called a web architect, web developer, site author, website administrator, website coordinator, or website publisher is a person responsible for maintaining one or many websites. The duties of the webmaster may include: ensuring that the web servers, hardware and software are operating correctly, designing the website, generating and revising web pages, A/B testing, replying to user comments, and examining traffic through the site.

Webmasters may be generalists with HTML expertise who manage most or all aspects of web operations. Depending on the nature of the websites they manage, webmasters may be required to know scripting languages such as ColdFusion, JavaScript, JSP, .NET, Perl, PHP and Ruby.

Job Description:

Webmaster is primarily responsible for the Website experience of everyone who uses the Website which includes all the customers, employees, partners and suppliers. Webmasters and Web Engineers are required to have deep and thorough understanding of web analytics.

Web masters analyze Ensure sites are functioning properly and are available to users.  Tests speed of access and improve upon loading speed. These are the website statistics that normally include visitor data, website server performance and user performance data.

What are the Responsibilities for Webmasters :

  • Maintain websites for clients and businesses.
  • The web servers , hardware and software are operating accurately.
  • Design websites.
  • Examine and analyze site traffic.
  • Utilize scripting languages such as Javascript.
  • Configure web servers such as Apache.
  • Serve as the server administrator.
  • Regulate and manage access rights of different users on website.
  • Create and modify appearance and setting of site.
  • Layout content on web pages.
  • Deal with and respond to heavy volumes of email.
  • Decide what kind of computer will hold a web site’s information.
  • Test websites to see if there are any parts that are difficult to use.
  • Meet with designers to agree on site’s design.
  • Fix links that don’t work and pictures that aren’t appearing properly.
  • Decide how site’s content will be delivered to the Internet.
  • Keep files small so sites load faster.
  • Test different browsers and ensure people with different computers can access a website.

Programming Skills: The tasks involved are coding the site, adding new features and content, editing navigation by using Javascript, CSS or HTML, logo and artwork, video and sound, and backing up the site.  It’s not required that the webmaster knows every type of programming language out there, but general he or she should be familiar with HTML, CSS, PHP, and Javascript.

Marketing Skills:  The main purposes of hiring a webmaster is to drive traffic to your website and make sure it ranks highly in search engines.  They will be sure that you have the right resources to promote your company as best as possible.  Trackers will be setup within the code of a website, which indicate which pages on the site get viewed the most and where the site visitors come from before visiting your site.  They can determine which pages perform the best in terms of search engine optimization and are able to prioritize external links and ad space.
